Control quality and dimensions

Lower encoding quality usually reduces bytes but can damage edges, small text or gradients. Reducing dimensions is another lever: a photo displayed at 800 pixels wide may not need a 4,000-pixel source. The maximum-width option downsizes larger images and never enlarges smaller ones.

A useful starting point

Try quality 75 and a width matching the intended use. For a photograph displayed at 1,200 pixels wide, enter 1200. Inspect the preview; no quality number guarantees acceptable detail. A logo with fine text may be better kept as PNG.

JPG replaces transparency with white, while WebP can preserve it. The comparison uses actual output bytes. If re-encoding produces a larger file, the result says so. This does not guarantee a target such as 100 KB or a fixed reduction percentage.

Keep the original: repeated lossy encoding can compound artifacts. Still images up to 20 MB and 24 megapixels are accepted. Animation and most source metadata are not retained.
