When PNG is the better format

PNG is useful when another application needs a PNG file or when you want to save decoded pixels without further lossy JPEG compression. It is not automatically a better choice for every photo.

Format Useful for Trade-off
JPEG Photographs and small web downloads Lossy compression; no transparency
PNG Lossless pixel storage, graphics and compatible workflows Photographs often become much larger

What this tool changes

Foldmint decodes the JPEG, draws it to a canvas, then exports a real PNG. Renaming a file from .jpg to .png would not change its format; this tool does. The resulting pixel dimensions are shown beside the download, so you can check them before saving.

What stays the same

The subject, background and decoded pixel detail remain. There is no upscaling, retouching or background removal. Compression artifacts already visible in the original remain visible in the output.

File limits and useful checks

Use a JPEG of up to 20 MB and 24 million pixels. For example, a 6000 × 4000 image is 24 megapixels. Larger photos need considerable memory and are rejected before decoding. Conversion depends on your device and browser, so keep the original file until you have checked the download.

Conversion uses the browser's Canvas export API. Images stay on your device; see our privacy policy for the separate handling of page visits and optional measurement.

Working with documents too? Try PDF to Word. To point someone to an image already online, use the QR code generator.
